Epson announced the development of its cutting-edge Infineon XPOSYS chip, scheduled for mass production by the end of 2009. The new chip is an “Assisted GPS” device, measures 2.8mm x 2.9mm, and will be 25% smaller than any A-GPS chip on the market. Furthermore, the XPOSYS should use only half the power of current-generation chips. Epson promises a greater sensitivity in indoor environments.

A-GPS is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones and enhances the start-up performance of GPS-based systems. This technology standard will likely be the future of GPS development for the next several years.

Coming in at the front of the pack in the miniaturization race, Samsung today announced that it has initiated mass-production of its brand-new 50nm GDDR5 memory. GDDR5 has a maximum bandwidth of 28 gigabytes per second and can transfer data at speeds of up to 7.0 gigabits per second. Samsung reports that switching to a 50nm manufacturing process increases production efficiency by a whopping 100 percent. It also allows the new memory to operate 1.35 volts – that’s a 20 percent reduction from Samsung’s GDDR4 memory.

Samsung also announced that it plans to extend the 50nm process to its graphics memory department by the end of 2009. We’re riding a serious…

Laser buffs out there will be pleased to know that Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, California just launched an infra-red version of its acclaimed Verdi family of solid-state lasers. This mother packs a powerful 25 watts of single-mode CW output at a wavelength of 1064 nanometers. Check out our extremely jargon-filled low-down:

Just like the industry-favorite Verdi lasers which emit light of the green variety, the new Verdi 25 IR laser utilizes a diode-pumped, solid-state unidirectional ring-resonator design to create its beam. Its single-longitudinal-mode output creates very low noise (0.04% RMS), narrow linewidth (<2.5 MHz FWHM), and a coherence length of over 60 meters. A piezo-actuated resonator mirror allows the output…

Barreling down the global imagination pipeline is this extremely progressive, eco-friendly concept that fuses printing technology with the world’s favorite caffeinated beverage. The RITI printer is designed around a cutting-edge print cartridge that’s fueled by used coffee grounds (or even tea dregs).  According to the designer, traditional printer ink is burdensome because it’s hard to replace, costly to produce, and it can leave a sullen stain on the user’s mitts if it’s somehow handled improperly.

In order to use the printer, a person would load up an ink case at the top of the printer with the left-over beverage by-product, and then fit a piece of paper into the middle of…

A stalwart young adventurer by the name of “dark sponge” has figured out how to rig up a home-cooked solar array that’s just the right size and shape for the Nintendo DS, resulting in what is perhaps the first solar-modded version of the dual-screen handheld to hit the streets.

The modification utilizes panels on both the top and the bottom of the DS unit which are wired in parallel to produce six volts of power at 80 mA – just the right stuff for a trickle charge. The solar panels are 60mm x 60mm each and are affixed with scotch tape. Go ahead, folks, if you’ve got the guts; chances are…
