Nano-technology is allowing for increasingly sophisticated integrated laboratory-quality testing and monitoring solutions; one new development in this particular field comes out of Israel, where a group of scientists have developed a “lab on a chip” that’s essentially a microscopic workbench intended to measure water quality in sophisticated detail and in real time.

A group of researchers at Tel Aviv University is responsible for the breakthrough development, which promises to replace the current standard of using animals to detect and monitor water purity levels over time. Says Professor Yosi Schacham-Diamond, head of the research team, “We’ve developed a platform - essentially a micro-sized, quarter-inch square ’lab’ - employing genetically engineered bacteria that…

Last year in Italy, more UFO sightings were recorded than in any year prior; then, the Vatican recently acknowledged the appropriateness of conversation about extraterrestrial life; now, a high-ranking Air Force chief in Italy is conceding that many recent UFO incidents could have extraterrestrial origins.

One media outlet noted that the Italian Air Force recorded 38 UFO sightings since 2001; 3 sightings were reported by the Italian Air Force in 2008 alone. On March 2nd, “A spherical object, coloured white and glowing with a red halo was seen flying at around 200m above ground over Teresina,” according to 055 News in Italy. Also according to that media outlet, members of the…

An interesting consumer gadget has arrived to market which promises to save people some money by allowing them to meticulously monitor their electricity usage at a glance. The Energy Detective lets careful consumers manage their electricity bills by keeping an eye on costs as they accrue. The Energy Detective, or TED, will accurately quantify electricity usage and display the results on its LCD screen. The TED provides immediate feedback on electricity usage and tallies total costs from second to second. See also this feature list:

  • Energy consumption in kilowatts (kW)
  • Energy consumed so far today in dollars and kilowatt-hours (kWh)
  • Projected energy cost for current billing cycle in $ and kWh
  • Peak use so…

On the night of the 14th of February, 2009, a Saturday, hundreds of people in and around the town of Esquel, deep in the Chubut province of Argentina, witnessed at least three UFOs scorching across the sky. Commuters, tourists, workers, policemen and others all simultaneously reported the same sighting.

What’s even more incredible is that the very same locality was host to a number of sightings just days previous, some of which were captured on video and camera. Locals believe that a UFO base of some sort is hiding in or around the area of ‘La Hoya Mountain’, near Esquel. The earlier sighting by a local municipal worker, Horacio Bordón, involved…

A company called SolarBotanic, which focuses on an emerging technology known as biomimicry, is planning to develop an energy-harvesting artificial tree. First of all, biomimicry is the science of artificially constructing what already exists – and works – in nature, such as photosynthesis. SolarBotanic is concentrating its efforts on a process which utilizes three major divisions of the science in this peculiar technology: Photovoltaics, Thermovoltaics, and Piezovoltaics. Just as a review:

  • Photovoltaics is a method of converting light directly into energy by using semicondutor materials.
  • Thermovoltaics is a method of converting heat directly into energy by using semiconductor materials.
  • Piezovoltaics is a method of converting kinetic energy directly into electricity by means of…

A NASA satellite launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, failed to make it into orbit and instead landed in the ocean after the payload was not correctly released from the rocket. Because of the failure of a particular shroud mechanism, researchers may have lost most or all of their $250 million investment.

The satellite was strapped to a Taurus XL rocket and weighed 972 pounds; it’s intention, exclusively to chart carbon dioxide levels on Earth and to formulate a statistical picture of how humans on Earth are contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby contributing to global warming in general. The satellite was equipped with a three-channel spectrometer and was…

In a spectacular display of medical serendipity, doctors have successful removed the HIV virus from a man by giving him a bone marrow transplant. Like others before it, this particular method seems to have arrived completely by accident; now, it seems researchers are compiling reports of patients becoming startlingly virus-free after receiving bone marrow transplants of a specific nature. The new case, which involves a 42-year-old American male, gives researchers the stimulation they need to discover gene therapy alternatives that could replace the antiretroviral drug cocktails in the long term – one relatively inexpensive treatment might have the power to clear up the viral problem for good.

The patient in this…

Here’s what’ll be hitting the atmosphere within a decade, folks: The Skylon reusable space plane is a new-tech shuttle being developed by a company called Reaction Engines, and its got a million euros of funding to back it up. It takes off from a standard airport runway by conventional means. After that, it burns atmospheric oxygen to power itself, and then changes over to liquid oxygen and hydrogen fuel in order to blast out of the grip of Earth’s gravity and into orbit. This is the real deal.

The engine on the Skylon doesn’t work with heat, however: It’s a super-cooler, which means it takes gasses in at 1,000 degrees Celsius…

A team of researchers at Pennsylvania State University has developed a device that utilizes an array of nanotubes to convert a mixture of carbon dioxide and water vapor into natural gas at speeds heretofore unseen. Utilizing this technology, machines soon may be able to receive carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, process it, and produce fuel and other chemical compounds – all while cutting the effects of fossil fuel emissions.

Given that other research groups already have discovered methods to convert carbon dioxide into organic compounds by utilizing ultraviolet light, the real breakthrough in the PSU device is its ability to work with a wider range of frequencies found in sunlight, greatly…

Although California itself is in a state of fiscal crisis, San Francisco is going ahead with the future, anyway: Three brand-new Smartlet electric vehicle charging stations were installed in front of City Hall, courtesy of Coulomb Technologies. According to Mayor Gavin Newsom, the Smartlets will be used to charge up cars from ZipCar, City CarShare, and a “plug-in car in the City of San Francisco municipal fleet.”

Now, we’re not entirely sure about ZipCars that’re battery operated, but we hear from Autoblog Green that they’ve got a single plug-in model, designated just for the City Hall. It’s a converted PHEV Prius – seems like it was cooked right up to fit…
