As the global warming is here, everybody is trying to come up environmentally-friendly projects. Green concepts will also consist of gadgets in the future. One company which will integrate solar cells in gadgets is Apple as they filed a patent for portable devices and computers.
The new generation of Apple’s handhelds and laptops will be powered by the sun as the patent shows that they will use thin film of solar cells on the entire surface and even under the screen which means that iPhones, iPods and MacBooks will never run short of battery.

Here are some of words from the patent files: “Solar cells are typically stacked with other layers made of transparent or semi-transparent materials… Some of these layers may be used for display or input purposes, and some layers may be coated with various materials or they may be etched with product logos or other patterns”.

One problem for the green gadgets is that they will over-heat due to the direct exposure in the sun. For the moment we have to congratule Apple and we hope to see other companies will integrate thin film of solar cells on gadgets.

[...] This is an interesting peek at something that might be coming our way. Based on the patent description, it looks like Apple may be planning to embed photovoltaics (solar cells) into portable devices. Specifically, the patent indicates that the solar energy collectors could be placed behind the display, which is an intriguing idea. Whether it’s part of the display or part of the casing, I’m sure Apple will do it with style. I’m imaging a laptop where every exposed surface quietly collects energy, keeping itself charged almost all the time… [...]
