Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center of North America has developed a concept car that looks like being a mixture between a Formula One car and a yacht racing vehicle. The design was called Formula Zero and is powered by solar energy. The concept will enter the 2008 Design Los Angeles Challenge.
The car has one electric motor on all four wheels and the batteries powered by an aero-efficient solar layer. Via this concept the guys from Merceds-Benz hope that they will be able to change the concept of motor sports, making the Formula Zero a competition where the energy efficiency is the one that really counts. So the skills of the racer an the car will be the ones that will make the difference, because everybody will start with the same amount of energy and at the end of the race the winner will be the one with the best time and the less amount of energy spent.
The only impediment in introducing such a bold race concept is that the car racing lovers will not be so happy not to hear the amazing sound of the conventional racing cars engines. Anyway Formula Zero may be able to compete by 2025.
