John D. Tovar

Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University have designed a self-assembling electronic wire which is destined for the use inside a human body. The organic wire is water-soluble and it’s made of lightweight carbon materials and many wires like these could power pacemakers, stimulate organic function and reconnect damaged nerve tissue.

Although we will not transform ourselves in Borgs or robots, these organic wires will help paralyzed people to restore their nerve fibers thanks to the self-assembly process. These wires are 10,000 times thinner than a human hair and they have the possibility to interact with individual cells from our body, and once the nerve cells are reconnected, paralytics will regain their mobility.

The problem is that for the moment this type of procedure is really possible, but in the near future the technique could be perfected.

“Can we use these materials to guide electrical current at the nanoscale? Can we use them to regulate cell-to-cell communication as a prelude to re-engineering neural networks or damaged spinal cords? These are the kinds of questions we are looking forward to being able to address and answer in the coming years,” said John D. Tovar, assistant professor, Department of Chemistry at Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

We have to agree with Tovar and say that the hard work has been done therefore the inter-cellular wiring will be ready when researchers will overcome all problems with the procedure. That’s the best part of it as researchers know the mechanism and they only have to turn it into a tool.

“If we used their self-assembling wires here, then this new ability would be possible. Yes, it’s all so clear now,” added Tovar.

Borgs

So, all we have to do is to wait for the day when we will all become Borgs. Until then, we will have to enjoy our normal human lives. However, this is not too important for us as it is for paralyzed people because these organic wires were developed to help them so that they can enjoy our normal human lives, so goodluck to the scientists.
