A psychologist professor from the University of Hertfordshire’s Health and Human Sciences Research Institute Showcase created “world’s most relaxing room”. Professor Richard Wiseman managed to build a large scale multimedia space which is destined to calm down the most stressed people.
World’s most relaxing room is showcased as of today until October 24th at the campus of University of Havilland. Groups of ten visitors will enter in this large multimedia room and they will lie down on soft-matting and their head will rest on lavender pillows for 15 minutes.
When the visitors will stay there, they will be surrounded by a green light and on top there will be a clear artificial blue sky, both of these are said to be the most calming lights. Also, the stressed “patients” will listen to a soothing soundtrack which was specially composed for this room.
“The pace of modern-day life, credit crunch, and financial crisis is making many people feel very stressed and so we have created this space to help them relax. Research suggests that the subdued green light enhances the production of dopamine in the brain and provide a calming sensation. In addition, the artificial blue sky helps create a mild form of sensory deprivation that will help them turn their attention inward and distract them away from daily stress,” said psychologist professor Wiseman.
The ambient music was composed by Tim Blinko, a professor of music at the University of Hertfordshire. “Richard asked me to create a piece of music with a slow and distinct rhythm, low frequency notes, and no sudden changes in tempo,” said Blinko. ”
“I have completely re-written a piece especially for this project. It features a solo soprano voice, chosen for the soothing properties of the human voice, together with a Tibetan singing bowl, used in meditation and a string ensemble,” he added.
Professor Wiseman got his idea after he conducted a study a few years ago. The study consisted of watching the walking speeds of people and he noticed that now people live in a faster pace and they are more stressed than ever on Earth. Some of the most stressed groups of people are students who face exams and businessmen.
“Previous work has shown that these colors, sounds and smells all help people relax, but this is the first time that they have been combined in this way, and it will be fascinating to look at the effect on visitors’ relaxation levels,” concluded Wiseman.
