I would have never thought that there could be such thing as a camera for the blind people, but Chueh Lee from Samsung China proved me wrong. Here is world’s first camera for the visually impaired called the Touch Sight. It’s very easy to use as it features a system that records the sounds for three seconds in order to help the blind people to estimate the distance.

The best position to hold the camera is to put it on the forehead because it helps the blind to stabilize as well as aiming for the right spot when shooting. Chueh found this technique at a center for the blind in Israel where a professor was teaching the visually impaired how to take photos.

The Touch Sight camera also features a “a lightweight, flexible Braille display sheet which displays a 3D image by embossing the surface, allowing the user to touch their photo” and along with the sound that it records, the blind will know when the picture was taken and what it represents. Another great thing is that the “touchable photos” can be shared with other visually impaired people who use the Touch Sight.

In order to make this possible, Chueh Lee was helped by designers like Dan Hu, Saiyou Ma, Zhenhui Sun, Ning Xu and Liging Zu. For the moment, the Touch Sight camera is only a concept and we can only hope that in the future. the blind people can enjoy taking photos.

I came to this article from my blind photographer’s group. While the concept itself is interesting, I have to nit-pick at this article’s wording.
“For the moment, the Touch Sight camera is only a concept and we can only hope that in the future, blind people can enjoy taking photos”
The inability to ’see’ the end result does not negate the ability to create the product. It can be done, it is done, and nobody needs a tactile camera to do it.
