AMD Confirms 7nm Tape Out For Navi And Zen To Happen In Second Half 2017

It looks like AMD’s investments and efforts in CPU and GPU space have finally paid off. AMD has been going strong with its latest CPU and GPU offerings. As AMD continues to make waves in GPU space, AMD Ryzen is giving tough competition to Intel. AMD unveiled the much-anticipated Vega GPU at CES 2017. Vega 10 is expected to handle memory traffic much more efficiently. The new architecture significantly cuts back on wasteful memory allocations using the High Bandwidth Controller, reducing wasteful memory allocations by as much as 50%. And now, AMD CEO Lisa Su has confirmed that the company is all set to tape out 7nm products this year.

AMD confirms 7nm Tape to happen this year

At the 45th annual J P Morgan Global Technology, Media and Telecom Conference that’s taking place May 22 to May 24, 2017 in Boston, MA, AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed that the company will be taping out 7nm products in the second half of 2017. This is a big milestone for AMD since 7nm technology is extremely complicated, difficult and not fully mature yet. Second half of 2017 looks to be a stringent target but AMD may pull it off.

At its Financial Analyst Day, AMD had revealed info on long-term roadmap for the next three years. Two additional generations are expected in the coming three years – 7nm Zen 2 and Zen 3 will succeed 14nm Zen and Navi and an unnamed next generation graphics architecture will succeed Vega graphics architecture.

“Our goal is to be very competitive in terms of our long-term roadmap. If you look at the foundry’s 7nm roadmap compared to some of the other technologies out there it’s actually really competitive. I think the gap between the foundry roadmap and the Intel roadmap has gotten a lot closer. Our goal is to be aggressive with 7nm technology. We will be doing tape outs later this year and as we get closer to production will give more insights there. But the idea is to be more competitive throughout the portfolio.”

Su also talked about how AMD is already working on implementing a new strategy to stay ahead in the processing space, wherein it plans to have teams working on two consecutive next gen CPU and GPUs.

“For our core IP, the core CPU and core graphics IP, you really need to do that to stay on the leading edge. And that is different, we really re-thought our entire R&D philosophy to be much more predictable and have multiple generations of improvement.”
