LG tried to push the modular design philosophy with its previous flagship device, the LG G5. The market didn’t respond too well, with sales of the phone ending up being lower than expected. Although the modular design wasn’t perceived as an attractive feature, the G5 gave us dual camera setup, a feature that got quite popular among many smartphone manufacturers, and one of the features that will find its place in the upcoming LG G6.

LG decided to ditch modular design with the upcoming LG G6, creating a device that features a classic design, with almost invisible bezels and interestingly looking display with rounded edges. Although early rumors placed Snapdragon 835 under the hood, some reports stated the phone will be powered by last year’s Snapdragon 821.

The reports proved true, as the newly leaked image shows the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 will be used as an engine for the upcoming LG G6. The image was taken at CES 2017, showing one slide from a confidential LG presentation. If you type MSM8996AC the results show the Snapdragon 821.

The reason for the decision to equip the flagship device with last year’s chipset may look strange until you find out a couple of Snapdragon 835-related info. Firstly, Qualcomm chose Samsung to manufacture the new chip. Further, the projected sales numbers of the Samsung Galaxy are so high that the Korean giant reserved all Snapdragon 835 units that will be made during the next few months. If any manufacturer decided to equip its flagship with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, it would have to wait for late May or early June for the release.

And waiting that long for the release of a flagship device would sink its sales since the most anticipated Android device (The Galaxy S8) would pick up all sales. It’s simple – while some users are ready to wait a bit before the G6 gets released, most of them would just end up buying the Galaxy S8 so LG has to release its flagship as soon as possible.

Also, most users don’t really care about the chip powering their smartphone; they use smartphones for social networks, photos, music, videos, and gaming, and the Snapdragon 821 is more than enough for those usage scenarios.  And finally, by equipping the G6 with the Snapdragon 821, LG secured a solid head start over the Galaxy S8. The LG G6 will be unveiled on February 26 and should come to stores during March, around a month and a half before Samsung presents its flagship for 2017.

Other info revealed from the leaked photo confirms rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, quad DAC, a “Full Vision” display, and dust and water-resistance. Yes, the LG G6 might come with a chipset that won’t be as powerful as the one found in the Galaxy S8, but the device still should offer more than enough power most users need. If LG put the attractive price, the G6 might pick up lots of sales before Samsung Galaxy S8 becomes available.
