Lindsay Lohan Apologizes to Small British Town for Not Switching on Christmas Lights
A local dispute Lindsay Lohan had with the tiny British town of Kettering— over her apparently forgotten pledge to turn the Christmas lights on Thanksgiving— was finally been resolved with a Twitter video by the apologetic star.
The Mean Girls actress posted a video message on Thursday, confirming that she will not be switching the Christmas lights of the town, which is close to 100 miles north of London, and wishing the locals a happy holiday. “I really wanted to make it but with my busy schedule I wasn’t able to and I appreciate the offer” she said.
The debacle with the small town began on June 23, 2016, when she criticized the its vote to leave the E.U. “Sorry Kettering but where are you?” the pro-E.U. star wrote in a tweet, since deleted. The message riled a local Conservative Members of Parliament, Philip Hollobone, who brought the matter up in Parliament later that week. He then invited the anti-Brexit star to atone for the sin of mocking the town by switching the Christmas lights’s on.
Lohan accepted, but a spokesperson for Kettering Borough Council said Lohan’s management team were not giving them a definite answer as Nov. 24, the date of the lighting ceremony, drew close. British actress Cheryl Fergison is now set to light up the town.
Local lawmakers told TIME in Oct. that Kettering residents are indifferent to whether Lohan attends the lighting ceremony. “I don’t think they give a sh—t to be honest,” said Maggie Don, a local Labour Party councillor. “They don’t know who she is.”
