Linux Mint 18.2 “Sonya” release date is likely to fall sometime later in June, nearly a month later the expected May release. The hint was given away by none other than Mint team leader Clement Lefebvre himself when he announced Sonya was just around the corner with the Cinnamon and MATE edition currently undergoing functional testing.

Lefebvre also stated a beta release was expected to land early in the month.

Meanwhile, we have some update for you regarding the desktop environments. Cinnamon has been bumped up to version 1.18 whereas MATE has also been upgraded to version 1.18. LightDM will be used as the login manager out of the box and it is compatible with guest sessions in addition to sporting a sleek design.

The forthcoming update will add some significant enhancements to Linux Mint’s homegrown apps such as third-party system software including the likes of Xplayer, Xreader, Blueberry, Xviewer, Pix, Software Source configuration tool, and the Update Manager.

The head of the Mint team also appreciated the response to his call for donation:

“Last month I mentioned that donations weren’t as high as last year. We’ve seen a fantastic response since and it was clearly visible this month. We’ll report the May donations in the June monthly stats of course, but since the month of May has ended I can already communicate figures. We’ve received more than $16,000, which is more than twice as much as the figure for May last year. We usually see more donations “after” a release, not before. The number of people who donated in May is also quite impressive.. it’s very humbling to imagine 647 people assembled together, here just to support our work. I hope we won’t disappoint and you’ll get to love this new release as much as the previous ones.”

Once ready, Linux Mint 18.2 will be available via the Update Manager menus if you are an existing user of Linux Mint 18.0 or 18.1. It’s alright even if you are not in favor of upgrading for whatsoever reason, all previous releases of Linux Mint 18 will continue receiving security patches until 2021.
