Mark Zuckerberg Is Opening A Low-Income Private School With Free Healthcare

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are opening a school and it’s taking an interesting approach.

Every student at the school will receive free healthcare services from birth through graduation.

The K-12 school, called “The Primary School,” will be a private, nonprofit institution opening in August 2016 in East Palo Alto, California.

“It’s a new kind of school that brings education and healthcare together,” Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post Friday.

The new school is funded by the Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan Donor Advised Fund.

While it is a private school, it will focus on low-income students and attendance will be free.

The school even plans to accept some students before they are born while offering some lucky moms free prenatal support.

The free school will also feature an on-site clinic for students. A partnership with the Ravenswood Family Health Center which is located near the school, will provide comprehensive health and dental care to children from the school and their families.

“Health and education are closely connected,” said Zuckerberg in his post. “When children aren’t healthy, they can’t learn as easily. Many kids and teachers across the country deal with the consequences of poor health in classrooms every day.”

Zuckerberg’s wife is a pediatrician and she once taught 4th and 5th grade science. She has been working on the initiative for more than a year.

Primary School will launch next year and offer full-time classes for 4-year-olds and support programs for parents of infants and two-year-olds. The school will add a grade each year.
