Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and the first Book are already nearly two years old. Tech enthusiasts badly want to get their hands on the successors of these devices pretty soon. But it looks like Microsoft Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2 are not yet ready. We are past April and there has been no word so far from Microsoft about 2017 launch. Microsoft’s lackluster launch cycle has disheartened the fans, but hopes are still high that the Redmond giant will make a comeback with a new Surface this spring. Moreover, Microsoft Surface Pro 5 2017 launch is now a necessity for Microsoft, since Surface revenues have dropped significantly.

Microsoft Surface revenue drops significantly

Microsoft’s Q3 2107 earnings aren’t that great. The company announced this week its Q3 2017 earnings and one thing that stands out is the sharp decline in year-on-year revenue for Microsoft’s Surface division. Revenues fell 26% year-on-year to $831 million. But on the brighter side, Microsoft doesn’t have to worry too much for now, simply because Surface line of devices isn’t meant to bring large amounts of revenues, although the company wouldn’t mind even if it did.

Microsoft is more interested in the value that Surface line of devices brings. It’s not that Microsoft would want to sell millions of these devices every other week. For example, Surface Studio wasn’t meant to bring loads of revenues – it’s primary target was to make people get another good look at Windows 10 in particular and at Microsoft in general. It was staged as a device for the creative guys out there. And it succeeded.

The Surface Pro 5, going along similar lines, may not bring substantial revenue boost to Microsoft but it’s necessary to underline and emphasize what Microsoft’s Surface line of devices have always stood for. Surface Pro 5 is expected to feature Intel’s latest Kaby Lake processor, 16GB RAM and offer up to 512GB of storage. It’s also expected to come with Surface Dial and a rechargeable Surface Pen stylus with wireless charging tech.
