OK GO Claims Apple Ripped Off Their Music Video Concept

Apple’s recently released “Perspective” video bares an uncanny resemblance to OK Go’s music video “The Writing’s on the Wall,” at least that’s the claim the band is making following the company’s iPhone 6 release event.

Apple showcased the Perspective video during its Tuesday iPhone 6 and Apple Watch launch event, and immediately following the reveal, OK Go spoke about the uncanny resemblance between the videos.

The video from Apple ran at the very start of the event which took place at the Flint Center in Cupertino, California. If you missed the video, that’s because there were technical difficulties with Apple’s event streaming towards the beginning of the press conference.

OK Go’s video for “The Writing’s on the Wall” and Apple’s video for “Perspectives,” incorporate different angles to show how objects can appear differently from various perspectives. As the angles change, new messages are revealed to the viewer.

Speaking to Bloomberg Businessweek, OK Go’s manager Andy Gershon revealed that the band actually discussed a collaboration with Apple. However, that pairing never occurred. Instead, Apple hired the same production company that directed the OK Go video.

So did Apple steal OK Go’s music video idea after they couldn’t come to terms? Possibly. Gershon says the viral music video group is mulling over legal options.

Do you think Apple blatantly ripped off the OK Go music video, or is this style of story telling just a new medium for video creators.
