What will the interior of a self-driving car look like?

Self-driving cars should be on the road in the next five years, but apart from Mercedes Benz ‘Luxury in Motion’ concept, we haven’t seen a lot of heavily redesigned interiors.

Faurecia, a French interior supplier partly owned by Peugeot Citroen, wants to be the first out of the gate with new and innovative interiors for the self-driving car.

At its venture and innovation center, xWorks, the team are working on an “active wellness seat”, which uses biometric sensors and software analytics to recognize stress, tiredness or intoxication and respond to it.

“One of our challenges is to create more flexibility in the cockpit of the future—make it more intuitive and predictive,” said Matt Benson, head of ventures and advanced innovation at the company’s xWorks.

Audi is developing a similar platform, Audi Fit Driver, but that requires a fitness tracker to recognize symptoms, whereas Faurecia wants the seat to do all the work.

Voice recognition to be key?

Faurecia is also building a voice recognition or gesture control platform for lights, audio, and control systems. This might work similar to an IoT system, where a gesture can activate several devices.

Deploying voice recognition into the car could provide riders with a variety of quick steps, assuming the system is fully connected. We aren’t sure how this will work in a driverless ride-hailing car, perhaps you will be able to connect all your smartphone to the car.

Ride-hailing cars will need to be routinely cleaned in the self-driving future, and Faurecia is looking into a way to auto-clean seats or use a material that is near impossible to stain.

Faurecia says that users want to do all sorts of activities in the car once self-driving is activated, including playing guitar yoga, and knit. Interior designers of the future will need to make space for these large tasks, while also providing comfort to those that want a smooth drive.
