New game Arknights: Endfield pulls plug on PayPal payments after unauthorized transactions

A new video game, Arknights: Endfield, had to suddenly shut off payments via PayPal just hours after the game launched. It was found by the community that other players’ purchases were taking cash from their accounts.

Users on social media noticed that connecting their PayPal account to the game would cause other unauthorized transactions to be made.

Arknights: Endfield is part of the gacha genre of games. These take other genres, in this case, action role-playing, and apply a “gachapon” to it. Like the old turn-key machines that gave toys in small capsules, Endfield features “banners” that can be paid into for a random chance at new, potentially stronger characters.

Endfield allows users to link their PayPal accounts to the game for quicker transactions.

In some cases, transactions were done in foreign currencies, as users across the globe got their wires crossed. One user, unfortunately, was charged with a 1,300 Euro charge after a Japanese player spent that much on the game.

Developer gives up update on Arknights: Endfield PayPal fiasco

The official Arknights: Endfield X (formerly Twitter) account has updated since their initial message on January 22. In a new post, they detail the timeline, including their identification of the “affected transactions.”

According to the team behind the game, Hypergryph, the issue only impacted “a small number of purchases”. They claim that this was due to an “inconsistency between the order and item delivery.”

Hypergryph has been in the gacha side of the gaming industry for several years now. Its original Arknights game has earned the company well over a billion dollars since launching in 2019.

While the issue appears to be solved for now, it’ll probably never be properly explained how it happened. Large swaths of the games industry are notorious for staying quiet when issues arise.

Despite the problems, Arknights: Endfield has been downloaded over 30 million times since launching (March 18, 2026).
