BIA/Kelsey Estimates Local Ad Spending In California To Reach $18.5B In 2017

BIAKelsey released estimates that local ad spending in California will reach $18.5 billion in 2017 across 12 markets, supporting Google’s recent claim that its advertising platforms AdWords and AdSense contributed $51 billion to the state’s economic growth last year.

The key vertical markets of retail, automotive and general services will collectively spend nearly $8 billion divided between traditional media and online and digital, with mobile advertising experiencing the highest growth.

Real estate — projected to grow by 29% through 2021 — remains the fastest-growing vertical ad category in California. Ad spending growth for real estate in online media will reach $197 million, followed by mobile at $155.6 million, television over-the-air at $43.9 million, out-of-home reaching $42 million, and newspaper print estimated to maintain at $36.2 million.

Direct mail will reach $4.60 billion; TV over-the-air, $2.68 billion; online, $2.30 billion; mobile, $1.99 billion; and radio over-the-air, $1.58 billion.

BIAKelsey named Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento as the top three markets, with spend reaching into the billions in some markets.

For Retail, LA came in at $1.58 billion; San Francisco $815.3 million; and Sacramento, $361.3 million.

For Automotive, LA came in at $1.03 billion; San Francisco $411.9 million; and Sacramento, $190.0 million.

For General Services, LA came in at $994.6 million; San Francisco $474.2 million; and Sacramento, $204.6 million.
