Any dad or mum knows, a rising kid burns through shoes as quick as that you may purchase them. but if a child’s foot grows, why don’t we’ve got a shoe that grows along with it?

That’s what Kenton Lee, pastor and founder of the nonprofit as a result of world, wondered when he noticed the toes of children at a Kenyan orphanage, bursting out the front of their previous sneakers. And so by using working with the Oregon-primarily based shoe design studio Proof of concept, he developed an ingeniously easy resolution: A pair of sandals that increase as simply as a belt.

Tobin Rogers

“We began out with the intention of creating a practical shoe. We didn’t care in any respect about style,” Lee writes via email. “We failed to care how it seemed. We simply wished to create a shoe that can 1) grow as so much as that you can imagine 2) last as long as that you can imagine 3) value as little as that you can think of.”

The resulting as a result of footwear have a utilitarian construction that would cost as little as $12 a pair with bulk pricing. The higher is made of notched leather-based, kind of like a pair of Birkenstocks with snaps. the only real made from sturdy pressed rubber, much like tires. The footwear technically are available in two sizes, small and big. The small takes a baby from kindergarten to fourth grade. the large lasts from fifth grade via ninth.

the true trick to expandability is that this rubber sole wraps up over the toe—kind of like a working shoe or a jester’s shoe—and so as a baby’s foot grows, this rubber can unfurl to enlarge the toe box.

Lee shipped his first batch of three,000 sneakers in another country in 2014, and from ensuing comments, and as expected, he has planned a series of enhancements for a v2 shoe launching this fall. “the principle growth might be lengthening our center strap and including some other row of snaps,” he writes. “mainly, for many youngsters who’ve been barefoot their whole lives—their feet are wider than other kids’s toes. So we’re going to widen our sneakers a little bit bit.”

What Lee didn’t expect was once that he’d receive so much pastime from folks in the U.S. who would need these shoes, too. in consequence, the 2d version can even ship for the U.S. market this 12 months.

“We did not create it with the goal of marketing it to an American client,” Lee writes. “but now that we do have a number of demand/hobby from an American shopper—we will be able to be offering a program for sales here…[though I’m] not sure what it’ll look like precisely but.”

It begs the query, will these sandals—or expandable sandals like them—achieve success within the U.S. market? Lee says that Nike and Adidas each passed on his concept when he at the start pitched them on it, but admits that he “was just a weird kid with a unusual thought,” not a savvy trade man with the suitable contacts to infiltrate the shoe business.

As a penny-pinching mother or father, i will be able to see the enchantment of a one-measurement-suits-forever shoe. alternatively, as a design writer, I see that the entire attire industry is embracing sooner fashion—and that features shoe corporations—to put into effect niche developments on a month-to-month foundation. In a quest for profits, the rage industry is marketing more expendable clothing that dates you faster than ever, now not sneakers with the intention to closing kids longer than ever.

So although I were to buy my son a pair of sandals that could final him a quarter of his childhood, likelihood is, the larger advertising desktop at work will make him too embarrassed to put on them for very long.
