Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted to The New York Times that the Alphabet company plans to integrate its generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool Bard into Google Assistant.

He said enterprise applications are obvious, but the idea is to “fine tune” the technology on enterprise data so it makes it much more powerful, with the correct privacy and security protections in place.

“Getting everyone their own personalized model — something that really excites me, in some ways — this is what we envisioned when we were building Google Assistant,” Pichai said. “But we have the technology to actually do those things now.”

Google Assistant is a personal tool. Last week the company said it would merge Bard and Google Assistant teams with a goal to put more emphasis on its AI-powered chatbot. Leadership changes also suggest the move.

Sissie Hsiao, vice president of Google Assistant’s business unit, last week sent a memo to employees announcing the reshuffle, explaining the Assistant’s longtime Vice President of Engineering Jianchang “JC” Mao, would leave the company “for personal reasons.” Google Vice President Peeyush Ranjan, who previously worked on Google Pay, will step in.

Amar Subramanya, Google Assistant’s engineering vice president, will lead the Bard team’s engineering, and Trevor Strohman, who previously led the engineering initiatives for Bard, will become an Area Tech Lead for Bard.
