Google announced Tuesday the launch of an updated SEO Starter Guide to help marketers and webmasters create search-engine friendly websites.

The traditional SEO Starter Guide lists best practices aimed at making it easier for search engines to crawl, index and understand content on websites.

Abhas Tripathi, search quality strategist, at Google, points blog readers toward the Webmaster Academy, which supports information and tools to teach webmasters how to create a site and have it found in Google Search.

“Since these two resources have some overlapping purpose and content, and could be more exhaustive on some aspects of creating a user friendly and safe website, we’re deprecating the Webmaster Academy and removing the old SEO Starter Guide PDF,” he wrote in the post.

Google introduced the original guide in November 2008, which highlighted about one dozen common areas that webmasters might consider optimizing, such as title and description meta tags, URL structure, site navigation, content creation, anchor text, and more.

“The updated version builds on top of the previously available document, and has additional sections on the need for search engine optimization, adding structured data markup and building mobile-friendly websites,” Tripathi wrote.

Google published the guide in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish.
