In the Cambridge Analytica case, a professor working with the firm created a personality profile app and started harvesting data from users, disclosing to users (in fine print) only that he was collecting information for academic purposes. Aleksandr Kogan told the New York Times that his program was “a very standard vanilla Facebook app.”
