Yorkshire God’s Own County

Yorkshire is the largest of the 39 historic counties of England located in Northern England, formerly known as the county of York. The emblem of Yorkshire is the White Rose of the English royal House of York. Yorkshire region has strong cultural identity and offers residents and visitors a wonderful variety of thriving urban centers. Travelers face confusion understanding the administrative regions of Yorkshire, it is best understood as four regions, North, South, East and West. Scarborough is Britain’s oldest seaside resort dating back to the spa town-era in the 17th century, the seaside town Whitby voted as the United Kingdom’s best beach, with a “postcard-perfect harbour”. Yorkshire regions

The confusing administrative divisions of the region complicate defining Yorkshire. Traditionally the area was split into three ridings and the city of York, which did not belong to any riding. The following four divisions are those that would be reasonably recognised by most Yorkshires’:

·         North Yorkshire – rural idyls of moors and dales, the historic city of York and coastal gems.

·         East Yorkshire – hosts formerly the world’s longest suspension bridge, the thriving city of Hull and plenty of gorgeous coastline

·         South Yorkshire – famed for Sheffield’s industry but also has part of a the Peak District National Park

·         West Yorkshire – as well as trendy Leeds and Bradford, near Wakefield is the world’s first nature reserve

Yorkshire’s wondrous countryside, great cities and warm locals have a long history of attracting visitors.

·         Bronte Country – a literature-inspiring region of moorland and atmospheric villages, close to Bradford, Keighley and Halifax

·         Gripping coastline – cliffs, beaches, villages and spa towns like Scarborough, enjoy a bracing walk and fish and chips in Whitby

·         Harrogate – beautiful Victorian spa town near York

·         National Parks – the Yorkshire Moors (North Yorkshire), the Yorkshire Dales (West and North Yorkshire) and part of the Peak District (South Yorkshire), Britain’s first National Park established 1951

Yorkshire’s offers great place to spend less and enjoy more during holidays.

·         Yorkshire’s rail network is extensive, particularly in the more industrial south and around the Leeds conurbation. There are various scenic routes through the countryside and along the coast. One of the UK’s most scenic rail journeys, Settle to Carlisle, starts in Settle, North Yorkshire.

·         Yorkshire is well connected by motorways, with a number of scenic trunk road routes.

·         The sizeable canal network that allows for slow and scenic longboat journeys is the industrial heritage of Yorkshire.

Things to do in Yorkshire

Yorkshire is a prime region for outdoor activities with a fantastic natural heritage and amazing scenery including three National Parks.

·         Walking – routes such as the Cleveland Way, the Pennine Way, the Wolds Way National Trails, the Nidderdale Way and the Ingleton Waterfalls Walk

·         Sports – Yorkshire has a wealth of professional sports teams (football, cricket, rugby) to watch and facilities to enjoy sports

·         Heritage railways – there’s at least seven in Yorkshire, travel from Whitby to the moors by steam or from Northallerton into the dales

·         Music – from the Leeds Symphony Orchestra to Sheffield being the home of Def Leppard and Pulp, there’s something for everyone
