Kawasaki’s first-ever Super Bowl ad is a glorious ode to the mullet

Alabama Waterfall, Hockey Hair, North Carolina Neck Warmer, Achey Breaky Mistakey. Over the centuries, one particular hairstyle has gone by many names. Now motorsports brand Kawasaki is celebrating the mullet in its first-ever Super Bowl ad.

The aim of the spot is to promote the company’s Ridge side-by-side vehicle to a mainstream audience, beyond its typical backwoods customer base. For those unfamiliar, a side-by-side (also known as a side x side) is like the camo-covered love child of an ATV and an off-road golf cart.

Kawasaki’s ad introduces viewers to two bros whose normie hair transforms into a glorious Ape Drape as soon as they turn the key to start up the Ridge. As they take a spin through the woods, every creature that looks at the Ridge grows a Canadian Passport of their own. A bald eagle, a turtle, a grizzly, wrestling legend Stone Cold Steve Austin, and more.

Created with agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, you can practically see the Super Bowl ad success checklist at work: a funny premise, animals, unexpected celeb cameo. Yet the spot is just clever and earnest enough to make you forget that formula, and instead feel the mountain breeze blowing through your own majestic-yet-imaginary Camaro Crash Helmet.
