Advertisements have begun appearing in Microsoft Edge more than before, following a recent update to the company’s browser.

These recommendations, which look similar to a sponsored ad, are for services such as Microsoft Start, according to Windows Latest.

Microsoft Start is a rebranded service of the MSN feed that provides users with “personalized trusted news, plus games, weather and more” in one app.

“Get the new Microsoft Start app. Just like on your PC, personalized trusted news plus games, weather and more — all in one app,” a new pop-up ad reads.

Windows 10 had built-in advertising, but some say Windows 11 offers more.

In Windows 10, the ads displayed on the lock screen via Windows Spotlight, explains HowToGeek.

Spotlight will sometimes serve up “cool wallpapers, but it’ll also sneak in advertisements for games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Quantum Break in the Windows Store.”

HowToGeek explains how to get rid of these lock screen ads: head to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and set the background to “Picture” or “Slideshow” instead of Windows Spotlight.

Microsoft also uses the browser’s new assistance to collect results from searches to improve the Bing search engine.
