With social sharing being one of the main drivers behind the creation of new apps, it comes as no surprise that restaurants are looking for new ways to heighten the eating experience. Since the invention of Skee-Ball in the early 1900s, crowds have gathered around arcade games. Successors of arcade games like Pac-Man and Dance Dance Revolution have done wonders to create an environment in which friends, even strangers, can engage in socializing and sharing the fun.

Social gaming began long before the Internet, and now, with various digital devices like smartphones, tablets, and network TVs, interacting with your friends wherever they may be is easy. Restaurants have now embraced gaming to add to the experience of sharing a meal. New technology allows for mobiles devices to be connected with monitors, where the public can cheer you on as you beat your competitors, be they human or computer programmed robots. Social gaming is on the forefront of fully encompassing the concept of “social sharing” by allowing the entire public to participate and interact with others.

From Pac-Man to 3D Virtual Reality and more, the days are gone when gamers would brag about their high scores on Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Brothers. With interactive games in theaters, restaurants, and even bars, the world of gaming is open to the Millennial age range from the late teens to early 30s who can now compare scores in real time. This demographic admits to wanting to be the first to try new technology, and are setting the trend by being information pioneers to their friends. The future of restaurants is here, and what better way to cease the moment than by grabbing a seat and letting the games begin.
