People are fleeing the ad industry due to burnout and the desire to work from home, as agencies continue to struggle to fill open positions.

Brian Dolan, founder and CEO of remote staffing company WorkReduce, told Insider that some agencies have hundreds of open positions. They are struggling more than usual to fill the slots and many ad professionals leave the industry.

On Twitter, Dolan called it a “watershed moment” for the industry, and said one agency, not a “particularly large agency, had 16 resignations in June.

Stephanie Nadi Olson tweeted: “Agencies sharing with us that they’ve never seen as many resignations as they are right now. We’ve heard it 2x recently. Y’all seeing this in agency land too?”

Other industries also are experiencing trouble finding talent. A survey of 423 marketers and agency employees by freelance platform We Are Rosie published in June, initially cited by Insider, found that 63% plan to change jobs or careers this year, while 40% demand flexible hours and every respondent (no doubt because of COVID-19) said they wouldn’t consider a job that doesn’t offer the option of remote work.

We Are Rosie survey results also cited that 63% plan to change their job or make a career move, and 68% would prefer a different work status.

Google is running job ads for a variety of companies in Gmail, such as Delta Airlines. Pier 1 sent job queries directly to their email subscribers, trying to recruit people from their email list. In June, Cor consulting service that really handles the finance & resource side of a creative business, ran a blog post talking about the retention problem in advertising and marketing. Cor ran a post to explain how companies can entice talent through job propositions.

In May, Inside Performance ran a piece — What Agencies Say About The Job Market — and not much has changed in the past few month. Agencies have hundreds of open jobs. Merkle’s job site still has hundreds of opportunities open.
