Paving the way for continued app innovation, Google just bought AppSheet — a “no-code” app development platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With the deal, Google hopes to help businesses build more apps with few resources, according to Amit Zavery, vice president of business application platforms within Google’s Cloud division.

“This acquisition helps enterprises empower millions of citizen developers to more easily create and extend applications without the need for professional coding skills,” Zavery stated.

He believes AppSheet complements Google’s Cloud strategy and its efforts to reimagine the app development space.

Specifically, Zavery said he admired AppSheet’s ability to power a range of apps, from those specializing in custom relationship management to field inspections to personalized reporting.

Attracting potential suitors, AppSheet scored high marks in a review of app development platforms conducted by Forrester Research, last year. “AppSheet has the most aggressive strategy and road map for empowering business people as developers,” according to Forrester’s report.

Per the acquisition, AppSheet’s team will become part of Google’s Cloud division.

Going forward, AppSheet will continue to work cross-platform, according to its cofounder-CEO Praveen Seshadri.

“While we have always integrated deeply with G Suite and Google Cloud data sources, we will continue to support and improve our integrations with other cloud-hosted data sources like Office 365, Salesforce, Box, Dropbox, and databases hosted in other clouds,” Seshadri notes in a new blog post.

While the majority of AppSheet’s mobile app users run on Android, Seshadri said that his team will continue to improve how their apps run on iOS, as well as Web browsers.
